"There are values in these mountains"

Gilmer County nestles in the foothills of the vast Chattahoochee National Forest in the Appalachian Mountain Range. Wildlife abounds in the many forests, rivers, lakes, and streams. Apple and peach orchards and dairy and chicken farms provide picturesque views through the valleys.

The bright beauty of apple blossoms and wild flowers in the spring, the new life of young annuals, the lush green of summer crops and forest foliage, the rust, gold, red, and green of autumn leaves and apples, and the strength and simplicity of the winter landscape all combine to produce an ever-changing panorama of the land and its people.

The mountains are less than an hour from on of America’s greatest cities.  Atlanta Airport is just an hour and a half from Ellijay. Atlanta’s downtown is even closer.

World class Restaurants and Nightlife, all this less than an hour south.  Chattanooga is only an hour north. Everything is close, yet the feel of Ellijay is so far removed.

All of Gilmer County’s population is only approx 33 thousand. It consists of 293,000 acres, with 80,000 of it being wilderness area deeded by the government.

With such abundance of beautiful mountain and river property, it is easy to stay close to nature.

The recreation here speaks for itself, with mountain biking, canoeing and kayaking, take you to a place of oneness with the river.

The hiking is world class with the beginning of the Appalachian Trail, starting at Springer Mountain.  The hiking can range from a leisurely walk in the wilderness down an old logging road, not a care in the world, being one with nature, to marking your trail because to your knowledge, no man has been there before.

Let your imagination run wild as far as hunting & fishing, with hundreds of miles of creeks and rivers. Trout fishing is accessible to everyone from the novice, to a pro fly fisherman.

Most of the wilderness area is open to hunting at certain times of the hunting season.

White tail deer or turkey hunting is great with massive white oaks dropping giant acorns, you get a jump on the hunting season if you hunt with a bow or black powder.

There are some people who value their health and plan their diets around what fish or game is in the freezer or what produce, fresh or canned is available.  If time or lifestyle does not allow this, there are plenty of local farms selling everything from home grown produce to fish and meats.

Of course with all the great outdoor activities, there is great camping everywhere. There are guides to hidden waterfalls everywhere.  So hike to your favorite spot, set up camp next to a gorgeous waterfall, and just relax into a home cooked meal around the fire.

Gilmer County also has a small municipal which is convenient for small private planes, and skydiving.

The beauty of Gilmer is God given and simple, not to be confused with boring. Its far from that.
